A giclee is a high-end print.  The image is an original piece if it was created using digital equipment as the artist's tools.  If the print results from reproducing a work originally created in another medium, such as painting or charcoal, it is a reproduction.  The remarkable thing about a giclee is its superb quality which rivals the original in nuances of color and visual appearance of texture.  Sometimes artists can use both digital and traditional methods to create a unique or editioned work.  Giclees can be editioned.

Printmaking is one of several art disciplines, such as painting, drawing, and sculpture, that allows an artist to create original works using a matrix, such as wood, and transfering the inked image onto paper or other surface.  Some printmaking methods include lithography, woodcut, etching, and silkscreen.  Giclee printing is a different technique than such traditional methods.  Giclee printing arises out of the use of digital equipment.  Karen holds a Masters degree in Printmaking from Syracuse University.  She employs a number of hand-processed and digital printing techniques in her work.
